Types of Activities
Warfighting Experimentation can take many forms, and the type of experiment that a Niteworks Theme adopts will depend of the question that the Theme is attempting to answer. Niteworks Themes have conducted one or more of the following types of Warfighting Experimentation:
Manipulation Experiment
A carefully controlled event intended to investigate cause-and-effect relationships, which assesses, in quantitative terms, the effect of changes to one or more (independent) variables on warfighter performance (such as the presence or absence of a specific IT tool or operating procedure).
Empirical Study
An objectively-analysed, practical event that provides insights into the associative or correlative relationships between variables. Empirical Studies are adopted when, for practical reasons, the deliberate or purposeful manipulation of independent variables (as in the case of a manipulation experiment) cannot be achieved.
Visualisation
An information practical event which relies entirely on subjective participant feedback. Visualisations can be a very powerful and rapid means of exploring the problem area prior to conducting a manipulation experiment or empirical study.
