Experimentation Components
A Niteworks Warfighting Experiment typically consists of a number of components, from design (how the experiment is conducted) through to measures (how performance is captured), all of which is documented in the Theme Experimental Design document.
Design
The comparison of a number of equipment capability options requires that any uncontrolled variability is minimised to isolate the cause of the effect. The experiment must be designed in such a way as to detect a difference between options if a difference is expected to exist.
Scenario
A scenario that adequately exercises the capability under investigation is required. Alignment with existing Operational Analysis (OA) activities is sought and wherever possible existing OA scenario development activities will be capitalised upon.
Experimental Environment
WFE requires the appropriate military environment to be developed to evaluate the options or processes under consideration. Depending on the timeframe of the question under investigation, the environment may include operational systems, or simulations and models of varying fidelity or a combination of both.
Players
WFE require military participants current in role, experienced in the subject matter and trained to the requisite level for the investigation. The number of participants varies considerably dependent on the breadth and complexity of command processes considered.
Measures and Data Collection
WFE measures typically include measures of Command and Control (C2) performance including measures of decision making, command intent, situational awareness, process efficiency. Measures of Effectiveness can be developed from experimentation data to support wider OA campaign modelling activities.
