Why Experiment
The ultimate objective of a Niteworks Theme is to produce a timely answer to the question posed by our military sponsors and stakeholders. This answer is presented in the form of one or more interventions - that is, recommendations for change that, if implemented, would remedy or reduce the capability shortfalls across UK MOD Defence Lines of Development (DLODs). Niteworks specialises in conducting Warfighting Experimentation (WFE) to deliver the empirically robust evidence necessary to support interventions.
Synthetic Environments
Warfighting Experimentation provides an appropriately realistic representation of the operational environment (a “Synthetic Environment”) and involves current military personnel in operational roles – in realistic or hypothetical organisational structures. It can therefore tackle a wide range of problems not amenable to pure constructive simulation or war gaming.
Informed Decisions
The experimental method enables the participants to establish cause-and-effect relationships empirically. This is important because military capability development is a complex change process; there are always multiple change options, across all DLODs, and multiple interdependencies across programmes, epochs and DLODs. Informed decisions in this environment can only be made if the effect of making various changes is well understood.
